The treatment of lymphedema depends on the condition's severity and extent. Since there is no cure for lymphedema, prevention and management are crucial.
Decongestive therapy is often recommended for the early stages of lymphedema. Treatment options may include:
- Exercise: Engaging in exercises helps to restore flexibility, build strength, and improve lymphatic drainage. Your doctor or physical therapist will recommend specific exercises.
- Bandaging: Using a custom-fitted compression sleeve or elastic bandage can help prevent fluid buildup.
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage: A gentle massage to remove accumulated lymph fluid.
- Intermittent Pneumatic Pump: Utilizing an intermittent pneumatic pump can promote fluid movement in the lymphatic vessels and prevent fluid from pooling in the arm.
- Diet: Maintaining a well-balanced diet and managing body weight are essential components of treatment.
- Elevation: Keeping the affected arm elevated above heart level whenever possible allows gravity to assist in draining the accumulated fluid.
- Infection Prevention: Protecting the affected arm from infection and skin damage through proper skin care and preventive measures is vital.
